Yankees

The Yankees have had some pretty good shortstops, and some have been impressive contributors on offense as well.

5) Roger Peckinpaugh: From 1913-1921 Peckinpaugh played in 1,219 games at shortstop for New York. He has a career batting average of .257 with 143 stolen bases with the team, and his .949 fielding percentage is higher than the league average of .940 for that time period.

The Yankees have had some steady defensive players who also helped their pitching staffs by calling a good game; fortunately for the team these five catchers were dominant offensive players as well.

The Yankees have had some great hitters at the position, and several have also been outstanding defensive players. Here are the top five in franchise history.

5) Chris Chambliss: A Gold Glove winner in 1978 when he led all first basemen in the American League with a .997 fielding percentage, Chambliss compiled a .282 batting average during his seven years and 885 games with the team. He had 90 or more RBI's for three consecutive seasons and hit perhaps the most legendary home run in Yankee history, a blast that came in the bottom of the ninth inning in the seventh game of the 1976 American League Championship Series, giving New York its first pennant in 12 years.

The best Left Fielders in New York Yankee history The Yankees have had a number of good outfielders in franchise history, with many playing more than one spot. But who are the best left fielders? I took a look at who played the most games at the position, and put up good offensive as well as defensive numbers. Contribution to championship teams was also taken into consideration when ranking the players. Here are the top five Yankee Left Fielders of all time:

A player who is great defensively will stand out at third base, and the Yankees have had several at the position. Here are the top five:

5) Scott Brosius: Appearing in 540 games during four years with the team, his .956 fielding percentage was better than the league average of .950 during his playing career. He was a decent hitter, with a .267 average and driving in about 70 runs a year. Brosius held down third base during the

can view -- pretty rare situation to find.

So what's my take? To be specific, I prefer the Yankees' wedding bouquet celebration to Milwaukee's bowling pin topple. The bouquet thing is subtle in comparison; the toppling pins were a little much for me. I pitched for 15 years of my life, and I know I'd hate it if an opposing team celebrated in that fashion. I think a celebration like that has a home in the NFL (a la the Baltimore Ravens of the past), unfortunately football's hierarchy is so uptight that it cut all of the fun out of scoring.

Earlier in the season, the Yankees didn't have this. Believe it or not, the key was A-Rod being in the line up. Just merely him being in the lineup, Teixiera started getting hot. Everybody was pitching around Mark before A-Rod came back, hence his slow start. Posada is back as well, the offense can have even more depth. I give credit to Cash and Cervelli though they did an outstanding job standing in the gap.

A week ago I posted that I thought the Jets had no shot of getting Brett Favre. Well a lot has changed in a week, as now the Jets are apparently one of two teams given permission to speak with Favre. The Jets have not yet done so, but they have talked to his agent Bus Cook and seem to be holding out in case the Packers drop their asking price. I agree with this strategy, as I would not give up a first or second round draft pick (which Green Bay is asking for) for a player who may only play for a year or two more. But if Green Bay gets so desperate that they are willing to accept a third round pick, even a conditional one that can become a second rounder if Favre leads the Jets to the playoffs, I would pull the trigger.

Taking a look around baseball one thing is clear, younger is better. Baseball is not a game dominated by older, experienced teams. It has become a game that is about youth, athleticism, energy and excitement. This is an extremely exciting time in baseball as there is a brand new fresh crop of youngsters who are taking the game by storm. Every team that is leading their division or contending for a playoff spot has a lot of youth and enthusiasm. They are ready to take the torch from older players like Ken Griffey Jr, Greg Maddux, Curt Schilling, and John Smoltz. With players like Jay Bruce, Josh Hamilton, Ian Kinsler, Hanley Ramirez, Jon Lester, Troy Tulowitzki, Ryan Braun, and Evan Longoria the league looks like its in good hands.

y have the best record in the major leagues and have 9 and 4 game leads in the loss column over the Yankees and Red Sox respectively. They are a story just like the 1969 Mets and the 1991 Braves as they attempt to go from worst to first. They have done it with a lot of athleticism, youth, pitching and defense. Led by Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, and BJ Upton the Rays can run with anyone and play great defense. Their pitching staff has turned into one of their rocks. With Scott Kazmir, Jamie Shields, and Matt Garza upfront they have a 1-2-3 that can match up with anyone else. And their bullpen is now one of the top in the leagues anchored by Troy Percival who has re-ignited his career. But the main guy to focus on is third baseman Evan Longoria. He has brought instand credibility to the Rays lineup. He plays gold glove third and can hit with anyone else. He is a clutch performer who will be the face of their orginization for years to come. I do not expect the Rays to go anywhere the rest of the way as even a 500 finish will lead them to 90+ wins.

All of New York needs to give Kyle Farnsworth a little forgiveness. Everytime he enters a game or even warms up there is a chorus of boos and groans. Everyone is always expecting the worse everytime he enters the game. In actuality they should be expecting him to get the job done. He has been extremely servicable and dependant this year as the 8th inning man.

It was a game that the Yankees probably don't win last month or even last week. Girardi's tyrade seems to have woken the team up and gotten them going. for the 2008 allstar game at Yankee Stadium, I do believe there should be good contingent from the Yankees. Besides Jeter and A-Rod who are the top two vote getters I believe that they should be joined by Mariano Rivera, Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, and Johny Damon. Damon is hurt so he should be named and he wont even need to play. Mussina is 2nd in the league with 11 wins and showed Francona what he can do last night. Giambi is in top 5 in OPS and HR's and could easily fill in for Ortiz as the DH. A case can be made for Matsui but I do not think that there will be more than 5

Following the Yankees 18 run outburst it looked like they were back and ment business. Apparantly that was just a mirage as this team continues to struggle. The only thing consistant about this team is their inconsistency. One day they look amazing like world beaters (either with a pounding like wednesday or by doing enough to beat Santanna Sat) and then they have games like lastnight or monday, tuesday where they do nothing right and their general interest in the game has to be questioned.

I still am in shock over not bunting last night but its time to get over it. Tonights game is 100 % on the offense. They need to score whatever it takes, ifits 10 runs they need to get 10 if its 20 they need 20. Hank is right they need to step up. The pitching has been great the last few games and if the offense was average they would have won most of them. So tonight and the next few are on the offense. I dont care who you face the offense needs to get the job done. Jeter, Giambi, Abreu, Cano, A-rod, Damon, Gardner, Betemit get the job done tonight and lets face Boston with a positive feeling.

One of the joys of spring training is watching trim young athletes competing for a spot on the big club. Not so with the Yanks this year.
