Red Sox

e been busy with the release of my baseball book entitled "Theo-logy: How a Boy Wonder Led the Red Sox to the Promised Land." It's the first full-length work centered on Boston's popular general manager Theo Epstein, and it's available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble or Borders.com.

Our winning streak is in tact going into Fenway (I realize it was an off day yest...but that can't be a bad thing...)

David Ortiz (not a fan of the nickname, you will never hear me say 'Big Papi') expects to be back in the lineup, but Manny may have to miss some time...

est record in the major leagues and have 9 and 4 game leads in the loss column over the Yankees and Red Sox respectively. They are a story just like the 1969 Mets and the 1991 Braves as they attempt to go from worst to first. They have done it with a lot of athleticism, youth, pitching and defense. Led by Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, and BJ Upton the Rays can run with anyone and play great defense. Their pitching staff has turned into one of their rocks. With Scott Kazmir, Jamie Shields, and Matt Garza upfront they have a 1-2-3 that can match up with anyone else. And their bullpen is now one of the top in the leagues anchored by Troy Percival who has re-ignited his career. But the main guy to focus on is third baseman Evan Longoria. He has brought instand credibility to the Rays lineup. He plays gold glove third and can hit with anyone else. He is a clutch performer who will be the face of their orginization for years to come. I do not expect the Rays to go anywhere the rest of the way as even a 500 finish will lead them to 90+ wins.

Wow what a game. In a typical Yankee-Red Sox fashion, tonights Sunday Night ESPN game was one to remember. It was a game that the Yankees probably don't win last month or even last week. Girardi's tyrade seems to have woken the team up and gotten them going. They kept fighting and clawing and finally found a way to win. Maybe it wasnt the prettiest game but it earned them a split, which is great after dropping the first two.

I am still getting over some of the decisions for the Allstar game. Here are some of the questionable calls (I realize some of this is my Yankee bias) I will not argue with fan picks, but the player and manager picks definitely have some question marks.

Following the Yankees 18 run outburst it looked like they were back and ment business. Apparantly that was just a mirage as this team continues to struggle. The only thing consistant about this team is their inconsistency. One day they look amazing like world beaters (either with a pounding like wednesday or by doing enough to beat Santanna Sat) and then they have games like lastnight or monday, tuesday where they do nothing right and their general interest in the game has to be questioned.

Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun- Boston Red Sox

What can be better than the New York Yankees - Boston Red Sox meeting on a 4th of July Weekend? Well a Yankees sweep of course. This is another series that will truly test the Yankees pitching. The Sox havent missed a beat without David Ortiz as JD Drew and Coco Crisp have picked up the lead. The Yankees pitching will also see something rarely seen in a

What National League team doesnt want the Yankees or Red Sox coming to town? I know Pittsburgh sold out three mid-week games versus the Yankees this week. This adds juice to the stadium and it also gets the team pumped up. They can finally play in a sold out stadium that is their own. Watching these games you can see teams like the Pirates or the Rockies last year play in a different gear to try and impress the fans and see how they do versus the best teams.  From a business stand point I belive that Interleague play will be here for a long time.

Mike Puma of the NY Post wrote a story this morning that David Wells is working out at his home in San Diego and that he believes he could help bolster the Yanks' rotation.  Hank Steinbrenner went on to say that he has thought about bringing Wells back and that he has seen him on tv.  This looks like a real possibility, especially if Igawa coughs one up tonight against Detroit.

It gets a great lefty out of the league and, more importantly, away from the Red Sox. And the Yanks kept all of their young studs. Of course, I wish the Yankees had signed Santana, but I firmly believe had they made another run at him, the Sox would have jumped back in the fray and won a bidding war. Theo just seems much more willing than Cashman to go to the wall to get what he wants.

While the Red Sox do not need to panic at news that Curt Schilling will be sidelined with shoulder soreness until at least the All Star Break this season, they should explore other options for starting pitching depth in case Schilling is unable to return or is ineffective when he does.
