However, as this past weekend yet again proved, Manning is simply not a better player than New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Manning, who is now a mediocre 9-9 in the postseason, went 31 for 45 for 333 yards and a touchdown.

Monday Morning Moneyball: Week 2- Big Apple Stars Are Born!

Welcome to Monday Morning Moneyball! Week 2 provided us with two New York tales of triumph that not only bucked old trends, but also may have unveiled the dawn of a new quarterback era in green and wide receiver tandem in blue. We start with the J-E-T-S, JETS JETS JETS! All week, media outlets all over the country have been replaying Rex Ryan’s message to the Jets season ticket holders. 70 seconds of fanfare and propaganda from Ryan begged for support over and beyond the norm from the Jets faithful, and his message was reiterated by Kerry Rhodes and several other Jets players, and the message was simple: We can beat the Patriots. That they did, 16-9, showing off their Baltimore style dominant defense that Ryan has brought over from the Raven dynasty. While I’ll delve into New England’s deficiencies in my Money Bites below, praise needs to be given to Mark Sanchez for his 2nd consecutive strong performance. While his numbers weren’t gaudy (14 of 22, 163 yards with 1 TD, 0 Int), his 101.1 passer rating is indicative of his efficient performance. Sanchez did everything Ryan and the Jets could ask of him in his rookie season. He stayed away from risky unnecessary throws, threw for a 65% completion percentage in the second half and executed on big plays down the stretch, including the go-ahead touchdown strike to Dustin Keller. Watch out young QB society, Tom Brady, and everyone else in the AFC, if Sanchez keeps up this act, the Jets will be a team to be reckoned with come January.

It is the time of the year where we bid adieu to our Sunday trips to the local outlet malls and Bed, Bath and Beyond. Where, as men, we stop our tofu and salad diets in the name of our loved ones who are repulsed by our manly guts, and turn the grill up to happiness. No more flavored waters, playing cards with the in-laws or going to the zoo with your kids- no, my fellow men, it is Football season. It is the dawning of imported German sausage links, cheap-hardcore domestic manly beers (ok, maybe Light beers, let's be honest, we are a little fat), and the most destructive hard hitting American game filling our heads with fantasy stats, eye-popping hits, and hope for a glorious triumph.

With the MLB playoffs set to begin, there is a subtle difference in the air compared to start of any other postseason. In the NHL, fans can potentially look forward to a great Canadians/Bruins series that is not only exciting, but has a historical kick to it. Likewise basketball fans always have the chance to see if the Suns can finally get past the Spurs and football fans love seeing the rivalry of the Eagles Vs the City of Philadelphia when the Eagles so much as get tackled for a loss.

lights and check out the rankings for the last few years.

On to another AFC East team, the New England Patriots.  Yes, fans of the other three divisional teams can see potential for their teams with Brady out, but one would be seriously amiss to count the Pats out on that basis only.  The Pats have a fantastic coach, a fantastic receiving core (arguably the best in the entire league), and a great Offensive Line.  Combine that with Sammy Morris and Laurence Maroney, two strong backs in their own right, and what can be seen is a team that may be crippled without Brady, but certainly not dead in the water.  Putting my fanship aside and being realistic, this is still the team to beat in the AFC East until they prove otherwise.  If they fall off in the next couple weeks, fans of New York and Buffalo can get a little more excited.  Until then, fans of the AFC East should keep a watchful eye on the Pats and hold their excitement inside.

But, Belichick is also a cheater both on the field and off of it. In September of 2007, the philandering fashion plate, who has a career record of 41-57 as a “HC” without Tom Brady at the helm, admitted that he had been illegally videotaping his oppositions defensive signals since the 2000 season.

The New Jersey Devils, New England Patriots and San Antonio Spurs are the current dynasties of their respective sports, with identities woven into tight-knit defensive schemes.  Their longevity stems from a simple approach that enhances their compatibility with free agents, while superior scouting has kept their draft classes productive.  However, the systems these teams implement would be swept off in the current of personnel change, without their leaders there to anchor the culture of winning onto newcomers.

Boston and New York have been fighting a sports war on multiple fronts for more than a century.  Baseball, football, hockey, basketball: you name the championship, our teams have battled over it.  Up until a few years ago, New York seemed to have the edge.  Even though the Patriots were winning, their other teams seemed incapable of making the all-important final round of the playoffs.  The Knicks were hot throughout the 90’s, while the Celtics were not.  The Yankees were World Series Champions, leaving The Red Sox in the Wild Card.  I disqualify hockey because both the Bruins and the Rangers stunk for a few years there, but you get the basic gist.  New York had the lead.  “The curse” kept Boston beneath us in the sports world.  Then, everything changed.

I have never claimed to be an expert when it comes to predicting outcomes of football games, although last year I nearly predicted the exact final score of the Super Bowl while hitting on seven of my nine prop bets. (My prediction was 26-17, the final was 29-17.) For whatever reason I had a very good feel for that game. This year's Super Bowl, however, remains a mystery to me. Part of the reason I am having trouble getting a good feel for this game is that I am a bitter Jets fan and I can't stand either team. I'm finding it difficult to put my personal feelings aside and look at the game objectively. I think right now I am as close to objectivity as I am going to get, and with that being said, here is my official Super Bowl XLII prediction.

ll number and his current Giants number) there was no need for him to throw extra motivation to the New England Patriots

The reason the Giants are playing in the Super Bowl is because of the team's focus. The team is always completely focused on the next game. (In this case, it's the last game, win or lose.) But, if we take this a step further, we can say that one of the big reasons for the Giants' success is that the team has finally bought into Coughlin's system. Not only have the players established a faith and trust in the coach, but there are even some, like Antonio Pierce, who would jump through a brick wall for the man.
