Mets

Former two-time WBA world heavyweight champion John “The Quiet Man” Ruiz signed with Golden Boy Promotions last week.

Ruiz (44-8-1-1, 30 KOs), a native of Methuen, Massachusetts, is scheduled to fight current WBA world heavyweight champion David “The Hayemaker” Haye (23-1, 21 KOs) for his title on April 3 at Wembley Stadium in London.

If the Mets head into next season with Bobby Parnell in their plans for the starting rotation, I'm becoming either a Phillies or Yankees fan. I can't take it anymore...I just can't. Parnell is garbage!

The question is, should the Mets be interested in the massive right-hander?

That's the question a friend asked me earlier today, and I said, "Sure. It's not like we have anyone better" -- with the obvious exception of Johan Santana. As far as physical ability goes, Zambrano isn't the 97-99 MPH flamethrower he was four or five seasons ago, but he maintains an effective power sinker that would work nicely at Citi Field. I thought he looked hurt in 2008, but I've seen the life return to his sinker this season.

While Tim Redding (who I can't stand) pitched his ass off for the Mets, their anemic offense couldn't help him out. The Phillies' famously potent lineup was held to just one run...

And the

," and why is Manuel's managerial job so secure? I understand that injuries have decimated the Mets' roster in 2009, but does that mean it should be impossible for the team to perform well? Does that mean Manuel automatically gets a pass for his personal performance?

The 2009 Major League Baseball season has been a disaster for the New York Mets, and we all know it, so there's little need to beat a dead horse. Let's move on to 2010. Offensively, the necessities appear to be left field and catcher, but the focus of this post will be starting pitching. "Pitching and defense wins championships" they say, so let's see if the

(Note: I posted this a couple of days ago on my other blog at FanNation.)

When it comes to the Mets' starting rotation, I think all of their replacement-level options are better than Tim Redding. Redding's stuff is disgraceful, and his general approach to the craft of pitching is laughable. He's been embarrassed in his last two starts -- recently against the Marlins, and the Red Sox before that -- and there is little-to-no indication of potential improvement. I don't think there is any doubt at this point...

All right, so I've jumped the gun a little (the Mets are 21-17, giving them 38 games played, which means they're shy of the 1/4 season mark), but I haven't been too active on this blog and I'd like to get up to speed.

lutely no signs of slowing down after being traded to the Dodgers last season.

And yet, the Mets appear content with Ryan Church in right field -- who was re-signed this past week -- and a lefty/righty platoon of Daniel Murphy and Fernando Tatis. Where's the pop? We're going to leave all the pressure on the shoulders of Carlos Beltran and David Wright? It wouldn't be logical to expect Carlos Delgado to hit 38 homers and be a contender in the MVP race this upcoming year. Plain and simply, he's old, and the holes in his swing are undeniable. He's still incredibly strong, just not as mechanically sound as he once was, and understandably so.

Lowe would have been a perfect fit behind Johan Santana in the Mets' starting rotation, and not only did Minaya let him slip away, he allowed Lowe to sign with a division rival: the Braves.

Sure, Omar Minaya may have cleaned up the pigsty in the Mets' pen with the acquisitions of Francisco "K-Rod" Rodriguez and J.J. Putz, but that doesn't mean that this team is going to leapfrog the Phillies at the top of the National League East. There are still a number of rather deep holes to fill, and they need to be filled with quality players, not stopgaps.

The Yankees should send Willie Randolph a nice little present.  If it wasn't for him taking so much heat in the papers and all over the internet about some of his comments, the Yankees and their terrible play would be front and center.

The Yankees get a win and yet again, limited offense...but it was enough.

24 February 2008

The best news for Yankees fans this off-season was the Mets signing of Johan Santana. It gets a great lefty out of the league and, more importantly, away from the Red Sox. And the Yanks kept all of their young studs. Of course, I wish the Yankees had signed Santana, but I firmly believe had they made another run at him, the Sox would have jumped back in the fray and won a bidding war. Theo just seems much more willing than Cashman to go to the wall to get what he wants.
