Watch Live: Ichiro's quest for 3,000 hits continues in Free Game of the Day (Big Lea
It’s only a matter of time now before Ichiro Suzuki becomes the 30th player to notch 3,000 hits in Major League Baseball. The 42-year-old outfielder will enter Sunday’s game against the New York Mets with 2,996 hits, meaning Ichiro could easily reach the milestone this week. Unfortunately, Ichiro is not in the Marlins lineup on Sunday, but his pursuit of 3,000 still adds a whole new level of intrigue to an already important game, which we’re happy to say will be featured as the Free Game of the Day on Yahoo Sports. Cubs get closer Aroldis Chapman in trade with Yankees (The Associated Press)
The Chicago Cubs acquired hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman in a trade with the New York Yankees on Monday, giving the NL Central leaders a boost as they try for their first World Series title in more than a century. The Cubs paid a steep price, parting with top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres and versatile pitcher Adam Warren in the four-player package going to the Yankees. Chapman also faced a domestic violence allegation in the offseason that cost him a 29-game suspension, and the left-hander is eligible for free agency after this year. [read full article]

Brian Cashman defends Alex Rodriguez despite poor season (Big League Stew)
Rodriguez has had a love/hate relationship with New York over his 12 seasons with the club, but last year’s resurgence after a long suspension seemed to endear him to the fans again. The 40-year-old Rodriguez is hitting just .206/.256/.364 over 227 plate appearances. While he’s still under contract with the team through 2017, there are some who are wondering whether the club should just cut ties with A-Rod. [read full article]

Mac Williamson homered in the fifth inning and hit a tiebreaking single in the 12th, lifting San Francisco over the New York Yankees 2-1 Saturday for the Giants' first victory since the All-Star break. NL West-leading San Francisco had lost a season-high six straight games and had held just one lead since the break: when Buster Posey hit a go-ahead home run leading off the 10th inning at San Diego on July 16 only to have the Padres rally for a pair of runs in the bottom half against Santiago Casilla. Williamson, whose fourth-inning error allowed the Yankees' run, began the comeback when he connected off Ivan Nova leading off the fifth. [read full article]
